It is
increasingly recognised that employee motivation or engagement is an important
contributor to performance.


But the ‘holy
grail’ of engagement, which is to capture the commitment of your employees and
ensure that it is fully aligned behind the organisation’s objectives, remains
elusive.


Although finding one common definition of engagement is tricky, there is some agreement that it relates to both:


Feeling good about working for the organisation, and
Being committed to helping the organisation achieve its goals.


Feeling good is fine, but not enough on its own to justfify much in
the way of investment on initiatives. It is also a bit "fluffy", and
what you tend to find is what people tend to end up measuring is a
jumble of opinions and attitudes that don't really tell you anything
that you really feel that you can change.


Meanwhile, very few measures of engagement make clear reference to the organisation's goals.
