The Audacity Gap

I am fascinated with what I have called “The Audacity Gap’ – the space that lies between what an organisation wants to do and what it feels able to do. (See “The Road to Audacity”). This gap is often unexplored and little discussed. But it’s there! The gap often exists because of things such as a lack of confidence, self-belief, faith in others, and unreasonable need for predictability or certainty. An important leadership task is to acknowledge this gap, surface it and begin to explore the most effective way of establishing a strong response. I saw this poem by David Whyte – I think it nails the idea perfectly.

Start close in,
don’t take the second step
or the third,
start with the first thing
close in
the step you don’t want to take.

David Whyte
